Your recreational vehicle serves you well for every trip you take. Ensure it can keep doing so by performing regular maintenance! RV maintenance is a critical part of ownership, and while it may not be the most fun thing you can do with your RV, it’s the most necessary. With the right tools and know-how, you can keep your rig in good shape so it will serve you well year after year.
Inspect The RV
The first step to maintaining your RV is to perform a thorough visual inspection of it.
Start with the outside, walking around to make sure that nothing seems amiss—no unexplained dents, no flat tires, no damaged windows or doors, no rust. Climb up onto the roof to inspect the condition of it. You may need to sweep off leaves and debris and clean it off to prevent leakage or damage.
Next, go inside your RV and walk around looking at the walls and surfaces. Check for mold and mildew, broken appliances, evidence of water damage or leaks and signs of pest infestation. You’ll want to sweep out cabinets of debris as well.
Lubricate Seals and Slide-Outs
The seals on your windows and doors help to keep the internal temperature of your RV consistent year-round, so you’ll want to lubricate them to keep them functional and prevent them from drying out. Use a silicone-based lubricant for this. If your RV has slide-outs, these will also need some lubrication to prevent them from sticking or breaking.
Check Tires
Every vehicle needs to ride on good, solid tires. Towing or driving a recreational vehicle with worn-out tires with poor pressure is asking for a blowout on the highway, which is particularly dangerous given all the extra weight these vehicles carry.
Use a tire pressure gauge to get an accurate reading for all your camper’s tires, then inflate them up to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure level.
While you’re checking the pressure, inspect the sidewalls for any cracks, and look at the tread to make sure it’s sufficiently deep and that there are no objects embedded in your tires.
